Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B (2014)

As most of you know, I'm a mom, which means I don’t always get to read or watch things when they first come out, so forgive the tardiness on anything that is such.

As for my review on this movie, in a nutshell, it was okay.

I have been a huge...brobdingnagian fan of Aaliyah from the get go. To the point that I didn't like artist like Ciara, whom I now LOVE, when she first came out because I felt she was trying to be too much like Aaliyah. The Princess of R&B confirmed a lot of things I liked about Aaliyah for me, but I felt it lacked a lot of things too. It definitely showed that Aaliyah, as a person, was genuinely humble and so real that you couldn't help but like her, according to the movie, she really didn't know how to be anything else.

The acting and the music in the movie left a little to be desired. The

actress that played Aaliyah, Alexandra Shipp, seemed new and unsure of her skills but portrayed Aaliyah’s innocence very well. Shipp started her young career in the Nickelodeon series House of Anubis and according to IMDB, (which if you haven't noticed, I am a fan of) she has a promising future (I recently saw her in Straight Out of Compton). The biggest flaw in either Shipp’s skill or the productions is that one of the main things the artist was known for was her fluid movements and to me, Shipp had none of them. Outside of the occasional head bob or sway, she lacked any movement. Background dancers is the most dancing you got in this movie. Now from what I have read, outside of high school, Aaliyah didn't have formal training, but she LOVED to dance and was always doing so. She was quoted saying, “I’m the interpreter. I’m the one that takes yours words and brings them to life. I was trained to sing and dance and that’s what I want to do.”

The music at times seemed rushed and off beat. As tribute, I think they should have simply used the original cuts.

As I said, over all it wasn't a bad movie though.

***Brobdingnagian , by the way, was a word of the day I posted on my FB page and I LOVE it and have been DYING to use it…sorry, couldn't resist.
